Izumi Odeki is a craft’s sake made in the sister cities of Izumi City and Katsuragi, located in the Kansai region of Japan. The calligraphy and the label were designed locally and the wrapping paper features ukiyo-e artwork (a Japanese art form of the early 19th century) by artist, Utagawa Kuniyoshi. These particular sketches were chosen because of their playfulness and liveliness, which is keeping in the spirit of the sake, and because they are local to the city and are featured at the city’s local museum. We chose wrapping paper over boxes because it is lighter, uses less material, and provides for a better presentation. The name Odeki comes from a word common during the Edo Period which means “very good”, which Kuniyoshi wrote next to sketches he especially liked.
